How the BTC vs MSTR calculator works
This tool answers one question: would you have been better off owning a Bitcoin treasury stock such as Strategy (MSTR), or simply holding bitcoin itself? Enter one or more purchase lots — the number of shares (or amount of BTC), the price you paid, and the date — and it looks up the historical price of the other asset on each of those dates, then values both positions at today’s live prices.
You can compare any treasury stock in the list against BTC, add multiple lots to model dollar-cost averaging, and share a scenario with a link. Because a company like Strategy holds bitcoin on its balance sheet and often trades at a premium or discount to the value of those coins — its mNAV — the stock and the coin can diverge significantly over time. See how Strategy’s bitcoin model works for the mechanics behind that gap.
A worked example
Say you bought 100 shares of MSTR at $250 each on 2 May 2024 — a $25,000 position. To see how that compares with just holding bitcoin, the calculator looks up MSTR’s price today and BTC’s price on 2 May 2024 (around $58,000), works out how much BTC the same $25,000 would have bought (about 0.431 BTC), and values that bitcoin at today’s live price. The results panel shows both outcomes side by side, along with the difference in dollars and percent.
These figures are illustrative — the calculator always pulls live prices and real historical data, so your actual numbers will differ. To line up every treasury company at once instead of one stock, the Compare page ranks holdings, mNAV premium or discount, BTC yield and leverage side by side.
Frequently asked questions
